Name
[Panel] Stay in YOUR Lane - The ATP Assessment and the Wheelchair Evaluation
Description

Medicare and those that follow Medicare require a specialty wheelchair evaluation to be performed by an LCMP (usually a PT or OT) and an in-person assessment performed by an ATP for all complex rehab wheelchairs (K0835-K0864, K0005, E1161) and certain complex accessories.

For the specialty wheelchair evaluation to be accepted the LCMP may not have a financial relationship with the wheelchair supplier and the ATP assessment must be performed by an ATP that is employed by the wheelchair supplier. While they have a collaborative role in the process there is a solid lane that they can't cross.

This panel will discuss publications from the Medicare contractors, ATPA, AOTA and RESNA to outline how each can do what is required while Staying in Their Lane and present a real-world example of the ramifications if they don't.

Proposed Learning Objective (1)
Identify the different roles of Physical Therapists (PT), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Assistive Technology Professionals (ATP) in the provision of complex rehab wheelchairs.
Proposed Learning Objective (2)
Determine the required content for each role, the acceptable sequence of events, and develop a protocol to ensure compliant methods for obtaining the required documentation.
Proposed Learning Objective (3)
Analyze the real-world ramifications when the line between these roles is crossed.
